Lost in the Sauce? Good. Welcome to the Age of Interstitiality.

HEY. UNIVERSE. HULOT CHECKING IN.

Is it just me, or does anyone else feel like their brain is a browser with 37 tabs open, all playing slightly different songs that are starting to harmonize in a really, really weird way?

Yeah. I thought so.

Welcome to my new corner of the web, a little blog I’m dedicating to exactly that feeling. We’re here to talk about the beautiful, chaotic, and downright thrilling spaces in between.

I was at this rooftop party last weekend—you know the kind. The music is a perfect thrumming bassline, the city lights are glittering like a fallen constellation, and the conversations are flowing like cheap, delicious prosecco. I found myself bouncing between a group of film nerds debating the semiotics of the latest A24 trailer, some coders arguing about the elegance of a new programming language, and a crew that was just, like, vibing.

And it hit me. The magic wasn’t in any one of those conversations. The magic was in the jump. The magic was in the weird, electric air that connected them all.

There’s a word for this, my fellow curious souls. It’s a little wonky, a little academic, but stick with me because it’s EVERYTHING. The word is:

INTERSTITIALITY

In biology, the interstitium is the fluid-filled space within a tissue, the network that holds everything together. It’s not the organ, it’s the stuff between the cells of the organ. And I am officially convinced that we are living in the Century of the Interstitium. The 21st century blogosphere—and our culture at large—is no longer about the big, monolithic destinations. It’s about the pathways, the gaps, the connective tissue.

I’m talking to YOU, entertainment mavens! You know this. The real story of the Marvel Cinematic Universe isn’t just in the movies anymore, is it? It’s in the post-credit scenes, the Disney+ one-offs, the Reddit theory threads that predict the next ten years of content, the TikTok fancams that re-contextualize a hero’s entire emotional arc. The content isn’t the movie; it’s the entire sprawling, chaotic universe of reactions and predictions that lives between the movies.

I see you, my wonky intellectuals! You’ve read your Foucault, you know your liminal spaces. This is the digital agora, the third space, the rhizome made manifest! We’re not following linear paths of knowledge anymore. We’re clicking from a Wikipedia article on Byzantine history to a YouTube video essay on the aesthetics of vaporwave to a Substack about mycology. This is where synthesis happens! It’s where new ideas are born, not in the lecture hall, but in the hyperlink rabbit hole at 2 AM.

What’s up, techies and code wizards? You literally build these spaces. APIs are the ultimate interstitial tool, the digital handshake between two separate worlds. The real internet isn’t Google or Meta. It’s the invisible mesh of connections that lets you log into a niche forum with your Discord account. It’s the algorithm that serves you a video so cosmically, terrifyingly specific to your soul that you have to wonder if it was created just for you, in a space that exists only for a moment.

And to my nerds, my fandom family! This is our home turf. Fanfiction is PURE interstitiality. It’s the art of asking, “What happened between this scene and the next one? What if these two characters from totally different universes met in a coffee shop?” It’s taking the established canon and building entire worlds in its margins. We are the masters of the in-between!

Finally, to my party animals, my socialites, my vibe curators! You feel this in your bones. The best part of the night is never the peak of the headline DJ’s set. It’s the pre-game, where the energy is crackling with potential. It’s the deep conversation with a stranger in the smoking section. It’s the after-party, where the real connections are made over leftover pizza on a living room floor. It’s the vibe, man! And the vibe is 100% interstitial.

So, this blog is a celebration of that. Of the gaps. Of the remixes, the reaction videos, the comment sections, the fan theories, the after-parties, the weird detours that become the destination.

This is my official call to all of you. Send me your best examples of interstitial magic. What’s the weirdest connection you’ve made online recently? What’s the niche community that feels like the secret, pulsing heart of the internet? What happens when you mix high fashion with sea shanties, or 18th-century philosophy with competitive gaming?

Let’s get lost in the sauce together.

Catch you in the comments, or maybe in some weird, wonderful corner of the web I haven’t even discovered yet.

Stay curious,

Hulot
